Spring 2018 Study Abroad

Have you always wanted to study abroad? Well, now graduate students at The College of Global Public Health have the opportunity this spring to study abroad at NYU Abu Dhabi, or NYU Florence.

Each study site will have different course offerings, which will make it possible for MPH students in selected concentrations (Community Health Science and Practice, Epidemiology, Global Health, Public Health Nutrition, Social and Behavioral Sciences) to complete degree requirements while in residence at those NYU Academic Centers for the entire term.  

Any interested students are encouraged to discuss their interest with their academic advisor to be sure the course offerings meet concentration requirements, then submit an application.

NYU Florence

What can study abroad in Florence mean to students? An encounter with the city of Dante, Petrarch and Boccaccio; direct examination of world-famous masterpieces of art in the "birthplace" of the Renaissance; to consider contemporary social issues at a campus where encounters for students with major European and American protagonists of world social and economic policy are a regular occurrence.

Florence is a city where you can easily walk or use public transportation to get anywhere. Most upper-classman will live off-campus, while a few may reside at the two campus villas, Natalia and Colletta, as Residence Life Staff. All students are supported by NYU Florence’s Residence Life Staff, regardless of where they reside.

Courses being offered:

  1. Migrant Health in the Mediterranean 
  2. Human Rights 
  3. Social Epidemiology 
  4. Thesis II or Capstone II    
  5. Results Focused Strengthening of Health Systems (in-person component if minimum enrollment)
  6. Public Health Innovation and Entrepreneurship    
  7. Epidemiological Methods & Design Epi (online)
  8. Research Methods (online with bi-monthly in-person recitation)

Students can enroll in online electives but all students must be enrolled Full-Time (12 credits) in courses with an in-person component. All courses listed have an in-person component but may be offered as an intensive course (1-2 weeks), or hybrid (online with in-person intensive 1-week).

How much will it cost?

  • Tuition: GPH rate $1664 per credit and applicable fees
  • NYU Provided Housing: $6942
    • Shared Doubles, off-campus apartments with shared living space and kitchen.
    • There will be a limited number of single bedrooms available in shared apartments: $10,250.
  • Global health insurance included (Geo-Blue)

Interested in becoming a Peer Adviser?

NYU Florence is seeking qualified applicants among NYU and non-NYU
juniors, seniors and graduate students for Peer Advisor positions for the
upcoming term. Peer Advisors are responsible for promoting the cultural
and academic growth and personal wellbeing of students at NYU Florence.
Along with other responsibilities, Peer Advisors assist with check-in and
orientation, conduct programs and facilitate clubs, serve as role models
and information resources for students, carry out on-call hours (including
approximately 2 weekends), conduct facilities rounds, report student
issues, work in varying areas of the Office of Student Life, offer support
at NYU-sponsored events, attend meetings with the Office of Student Life
staff, and undertake residence life and administrative tasks. Each Peer
Advisor lives with and is responsible for other students in either on or
off-campus residences. Compensation is room (usually a double or triple
room for undergraduates – roommate requests are permitted, single room for
graduate students) and board (breakfast and dinner in the Villa Natalia
cafeteria). Interested students should e-mail their resume and cover
letter to florence.studentlife@nyu.edu. Once you've been accepted in the

GPH Study Abroad program, apply to be a Peer Advisor by October 26.

Scheduled interviews will take place via Skype or, if
possible, in person. NYU Florence staff will notify students of their
decisions by Friday, November 3. Please note that Peer Advisors are
expected to arrive in Florence on Sunday, January 21.

NYU Abu Dhabi

NYU Abu Dhabi provides the full University, private campus experience to all student residents. All students are required to live on campus due to restrictions of the residence visa.

  2. Program Planning and Evaluation
  3. Building and Leading Global Public Health Organizations
  4. Monitoring and Management Public Health Programs for Equity (online but with in-person component if minimum enrollment)
  5. Thesis II or Capstone II
  6. Epidemiological Design & Methods (online)

Students can enroll in online electives but all students must be enrolled Full-Time (12 credits) with at least 3 courses that have an in-person component. All courses listed have an in-person component but may be offered as an intensive course (1-2 weeks), or hybrid (online with in-person intensive 1-week).  With the exception of Thesis II, Capstone II and Advanced Epidemiology that will run the full duration of the semester, courses are offered as intensives or online/intensives sequentially in  a segmented format.

  • NYU Provided Housing (approximate): $6000 Suites with 2 private bedrooms, shared kitchen and living space in Graduate housing. (no mixed gender assignments)

Accommodations

Graduate students live in separate housing than the undergraduates, in two or three bedroom, furnished suites with private bathrooms, a shared living space, kitchen, television and Wi-Fi. Students at NYUAD have access to all the amenities that the undergraduates do; including a fitness center, multiple on-campus restaurants, access to the Career Development Center, shuttles to Abu Dhabi proper, and on-campus activities, guest speakers and events.
