In the School of Global Public Health's Master of Arts in Bioethics program, you'll engage with ethics from an interdisciplinary perspective that prepares you for the challenges experienced in the fields of medicine, law, environmental studies, public health, and more.

Who Should Apply?

The MA in Bioethics program is suited to students who are considering subsequent careers in bioethics, philosophy, medicine, law, government or public health. Our students are interested in exploring the central moral and social issues of our time. We count recent college graduates, medical students, practicing attorneys, nurses, physicians, and writers among our community of scholars.

Deadlines

Upcoming Deadline: May 1

This is the recommended deadline for international students to ensure enough time for visa processing.

Completed applications submitted by this dates will receive a decision within 4 weeks of the deadline. Applications submitted after deadline will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis as space allows.

Timeline

Full-time students will be able to complete the degree in a single calendar year. If you are enrolled part-time, you may take two or three courses per year. The core courses are scheduled for early evening to accommodate students otherwise employed. Some electives are earlier in the day.

Cost of Attending

Upon acceptance, all students are automatically considered for the Bioethics Fellowship, a one-time tuition discount. For full-time students, this total amount will be split between the Fall and Spring semesters. Students intending to take the program part-time should notify the Center to have their fellowship award re-distributed across the number of semesters they will be in the program.

How To Apply

The MA in Bioethics program requires that students apply to our program using SOPHAS. To be considered for review, a complete application must be submitted by the appropriate deadlines.

All applicants are required to submit the following:

  • The completed SOPHAS application, including application fee
  • B.A., B.S., R.N., M.D., J.D., or other professional degrees, preferably with one or more courses in medical, professional, or environmental ethics; philosophy; medical anthropology; history or sociology; health care administration, law, or policy; ecology and environmental policy
  • Personal statement
  • Resume or CV
  • Essay (roughly 10 pages double spaced) discussing an ethical issue in bioethics
  • Official transcripts from each post-secondary institution attended
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) from all applicants whose native language is not English and who did not receive the equivalent of a US bachelor's degree at an institution where English is the primary language of instruction.
