4+1 BA Gallatin / MPH GPH

The Gallatin School of Individualized Study and the School of Global Public Health offer a 4+1 program to enable students to earn both a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Gallatin’s Individualized Major and a Master of Public Health (MPH) in Biostatistics, Community Health Science & Practice, Environmental Public Health Sciences, Epidemiology, Global Health, Public Health Policy & Management, Social and Behavioral Sciences. Both the Gallatin School and GPH have a strong commitment to interdisciplinary study and challenge students to enhance and focus their opportunities for learning and  help them build a meaningful career in public service.  This accelerated program is designed for academically strong students with an equally strong commitment to public leadership. In addition, the 4+1 BA-MPH program will position students well for entry into the field of public health, as it helps them find practical application for their ambitions to engage in the work of the public sphere.

How it Works

Students admitted to the 4+1 BA/MPH program will accelerate their progress to the MPH degree by earning 15 MPH credits during their undergraduate program. These 15 credits comprise 5 of the 6 MPH required core courses. Students may double count these 15 credits toward both the BA and the MPH degrees. Students who wish to pursue an MPH concentration in Biostatistics, Community Health Science & Practice, Epidemiology, or  Social and Behavioral Sciences must complete an additional 2 MPH courses (6 credits) during their undergraduate studies in order to complete the BA/MPH in 5 years. These 6 credits will not be double-counted as they will be transferred into the MPH degree. Specific courses are indicated in the course sequences below. No undergraduate courses may be counted towards the MPH degree.

Students who pursue the 4 + 1 will have a total of 159 credits and two degrees at the end of the 5 years. Taken separately, both degrees would take a minimum of six years and a total of 174 credits.

Who Should Apply?

Admission to the 4+1 BA/MPH program is open to Gallatin undergraduate students who have completed 64 units toward the BA degree, with a GPA of 3.5 or higher, and have completed the equivalent of a college level pre-calculus course. Prior to the 5th year (the MPH year), students will complete an online form via SOPHAS (the centralized application service for public health) in order to be officially matriculated into the MPH portion of the 4 + 1. Students who pursue the 4 + 1 should understand that this is an intensive program, essentially eliminating one year of what would normally take 6 years to complete (4 years of undergraduate coursework plus 2 years of MPH coursework).

Questions?
Email Cameron Williams, Gallatin Sophomore Class Adviser at cw1375@nyu.edu OR a GPH advisor at gph.studentaffairs@nyu.edu. When reaching out to the Student Affairs office please include your name n# and which MPH concentration you are interested in.

Steps to Take during the 4 + 1:

Year 3

Student completes 12 credits of MPH coursework along with Gallatin coursework

Year 4

Student completes 12-13 credits of MPH coursework along with Gallatin coursework

Year 5

Student completes the remaining 21-22 credits of MPH coursework, which includes 180 hours of public health practice and a thesis/research paper.

Epidemiology

The Epidemiology concentration trains students to become public health professionals that possess the ski
lls to critically analyze and understand how individual, social and structural factors shape population-level health and well-being.

Our foremost goal is to provide rigorous education and training in the conceptual and practical applications of epidemiological methods for the next generation of public health leaders. Students are also encouraged to work with faculty mentors, community-based organizations as well as local, state and federal public health agencies to make important connections as well as gain the skills required to become public health leaders.

Public Health Policy & Management

The Department of Public Health Policy and Management offers two specializations: (1) Public Health Policy and (2)Public Health Management. The department aims to develop leaders who will influence policy and manage organizations to improve and protect the public’s health. You will be prepared to develop, implement, and evaluate policies and management strategies in health care and public health. If you are interested in working with government agencies, nonprofits, or private health care organizations that seek to advance public health, these concentrations are suited to your career goals.

Like all MPH students, you will take the core public health courses in biostatistics, epidemiology, social and behavioral determinants of health, environmental health, and the essentials of public health biology. You will then select a concentration in either Public Health Management or Public Health Policy.
