The College of Public Health at New York University (CGPH) offers graduate-level courses administered entirely online that equip professionals with essential knowledge and training in core public health concepts. CGPH provides the Advanced Certificate in Public Health which offers the foundations for an MPH or to take the CPH exam. Learn more about the certificate program here.
After completing the NYU CGPH Advanced Certificate in Public Health, you will be eligible to take the Certified Public Health (CPH) exam if you have three years of relevant public health experience or a graduate degree in another field. An online non-credit CPH Review Course is included to help you prepare for the exam.

Enhance Your Public Health Capacity With Just 5 Courses

All credits earned in the certificate are applicable to the NYU MPH program and may be transferred to graduate programs at other institutions (subject to transfer policies).

The five courses offered follow the Core Competency Model of the Association of Schools and Programs in Public Health (ASPPH):

  • GPH-GU 5106 Epidemiology (3 credits)
  • GPH-GU 5140 Global Issues in Social and Behavioral Health (3 credits)
  • GPH-GU 5995 Biostatistics for Public Health (3 credits)
  • GPH-GU 5153 Global Environmental Public Health (3 credits)
  • GPH-GU 5110 Global Health Policy and Management (3 credits)

Q & A

Potential enrollees include public health practitioners who are working in local, state, and federal departments of public health, as well as health related professionals working in community and non-governmental agencies, hospitals, and other health care facilities.

The certificate is also appropriate for those who may be interested in the MPH degree but are either currently unable to attend an in-person program or are unsure if they wish to commit to the MPH program. 

All credits earned in the certificate are applicable to the NYU MPH program.

Yes. All courses taken as part of the certificate are awarded NYU graduate-level credits.

These credits may be applied to the NYU MPH program or transferred into academic programs at other institutions (subject to transfer policies).

How do I apply?

Applications must be submitted online through SOPHAS Express, the common application for schools and programs of public health. In order to be eligible for the certificate, an applicant must hold the following:

  • Bachelor's degree or US equivalent from an accredited institution
  • Minimum 2.75 cumulative undergraduate GPA

To apply, applicants must submit the following materials through SOPHAS Express:

  • Scanned copies of transcripts for all post-secondary education completed, regardless of whether a degree was awarded
  • Resume or CV
  • Personal statement of no longer than 1200 words expressing a rationale for pursuing the certificate
  • 1 letter of support from either a professional or academic reference

We are now accepting applications for Spring 2017 admission to the certificate program.

 

Yes. Students who complete the certificate and who have five years or more of relevant public health experience or possess a relevant graduate degree may sit for the exam.

An online non-credit CPH Review Course will be offered to certificate students at no extra cost as preparation for taking the CPH exam.

Spring classes will begin on January ?, 2017.

 

The online courses are offered via NYU Classes, NYU's online learning system.

Course Format & Design: The courses will contain the same learning objectives, foundation knowledge and critical thinking skills as the same courses taught on the NYU campus, but the components, syllabus, lectures, exams, and projects will be revised utilizing a variety of interactive modalities compatible for asynchronous learning.

Online learning modalities will include but not be limited to:

Video lessons with embedded graphics and visuals

Instructor/student threaded discussions to allow instructors to clarify information and respond to students' questions as well as provide peer interaction

Interactive Case Studies

Simulation/Animation

Live Instructor Office Hours using Synchronous Meeting Tool, Big Blue Button

Self-assessment lesson quizzes with immediate feedback

Some courses will have a few synchronous sessions offered on Big Blue Button (similar to Skype)

The courses consist of a 15 week semester in Fall and Spring terms and follow the NYU academic calendar just as the tradition courses. The Summer session courses will be the same 15 lessons offered in the six week session.

The course faculty will work with you each week, throughout the course to respond to your questions, offer feedback on assignments and discussions and grade homework assignments.

The certificate tuition is charged on a per-credit basis at a cost of $800 per credit.

Students may be eligible for federal financial aid and/or private educational loans to pursue the certificate program.
