Tuition and Financial Aid

NYU GPH is here to help you on your path to becoming a Public Health professional in this in-demand field. Along with the NYU Office of Financial Aid, we are committed to helping you make your GPH degree a reality through a variety of resources, no matter where you are in your academic journey.

NYU charges tuition on a per-credit basis, at the start of each term. Using the tuition calculator found on the website of the NYU Office of the Bursar, you can calculate the tuition and fee cost of a term at current rates.

Programs at GPH require 32 (MA), 46 (MPH and MS) or 42 (DrPH) credits to complete. If you add a certificate to your degree program, or are enrolled in a dual degree program, your credit requirements may differ.

For more information on tuition, please visit the financial aid section of the FAQ page.

Below you will find resources to help you make this world-class education more affordable.

GPH’s MPH, MS and MA students have multiple options to assist them in attending one of the world’s most innovative and pragmatic global public health colleges.

One of the most important things to remember is that you need to start to create a plan to finance your degree before you come to campus. This can include a variety of resources, some you will need to secure before your arrival and others that you will have access to as a student. It is important to know before you go, to ensure your successful completion of your degree program of choice.

We have collected a variety of internal and external resources to help you finance your degree.

Student Loans

Most GPH master's students who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents subsidize their degree through federal loan programs offered by the U.S. Department of Education. To apply, you’ll need to file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) every year in which you’d like to collect financial aid.

You can receive several types of financial aid loans through the FAFSA, depending on your eligibility:

You can also apply for private loans if you require additional financial assistance.

Program Scholarships

We are a community of leaders, world-changers, and bold thinkers. Because of this outlook, GPH offers program scholarships to our most extraordinary applicants who demonstrate an outstanding academic record and strong leadership potential. NYU GPH competitive merit based scholarship aid is awarded through the admissions process. All of our incoming students both domestic and international, are equally considered for aid through a holistic review process. There is no separate scholarship application to be considered for NYU GPH Scholarships.

Please note that NYU GPH has a set amount of scholarship aid, NYU GPH does not offer continuing student aid and does not have full-time scholarships available for students in any of our certificate, master's level or DrPH programs. We understand that scholarship funding is very important in your decision making as you consider graduate programs, but please note that we are not able to alter scholarship funding awards. We do know that far more are deserving of funding, but we simply cannot accommodate all funding requests.

On-campus Employment

In order to help defray the cost of living expenses, many graduate students at GPH work part-time in administrative or professional capacities on-campus to earn money to help support themselves while enrolled. International students studying on an F-1 visa are eligible to work up to 20 hours per week on campus. In order to facilitate this, you’ll find that most of your coursework is held in the evenings, with some additional options to complete some classes online, to allow you to work during the day.

NYU offers a number of on-campus work opportunities that can help defray the cost of living expenses, both in the School of Global Public Health and within other areas of the University to help fund living expenses. Some of these opportunities may be working with faculty as a grader for graduate and/or undergraduate public health courses or as a research intern. Often, faculty seek out students who have done very well in their courses to fill these positions. There are also several on-campus employment opportunities that you may apply for using the Wasserman Career Center. The most common positions are student workers who assist in administrative tasks as well as research opportunities with the faculty. Also, keep in mind for our international students that all of NYU GPH master’s programs have been classified as STEM-eligible, allowing international students on an F-1 visa to apply for two years of additional employment in the United States after graduation if they meet the required criteria.

In addition, the Office Student Affairs sends out a weekly career e-newsletter called The Public Health Post; please email your contact information to gph.studentaffairs@nyu.edu if you would like to sign up.

As part of your financial aid package, (domestic, permanent resident or eligible non citizens) may also receive Federal Work Study (FWS), a federal program that grants funds to NYU to enhance on-campus part-time work opportunities for students. You have the option to either accept or decline Federal Work-Study when accepting your financial aid package; eligible on-campus positions are available through the Wasserman Center for Career Development.

Employer Support or Tuition Remission

In order to help defray the cost of tuition, many graduate students at GPH work full- or part-time throughout their time as a student. We highly recommend connecting with your employer to see what employer support or more commonly known as tuition remission opportunities they may have available. In order to facilitate access for working professionals, you’ll find that most of your coursework is held in the evenings ( class start times are 4:55pm or 6:35pm), with some additional options to complete some classes online, to allow you to work during the day.

The School of Global Public Health offers PhD students financial support designed to help you undertake full-time study and research, to participate in superior academic and scholarly experiences, and to complete your studies in a timely manner. Students who are admitted to the program will be fully funded by a fellowship or a combination of fellowship and Research Assistantship for five years. During fellowship years, students will engage with their mentors and develop their scholarship and portfolio. In Research Assistantship years, students will continue to build their portfolios while working on an externally funded project with her/his mentor or another GPH faculty member.

NYU GPH also offers some competitive funding to PhD students to cover conference travel, pre-dissertation exploratory research, and dissertation write-up.

International Students

International students who apply by the specified deadline and are admitted to the PhD in Public Health are automatically considered for the same competitive financing opportunities as domestic students to fully fund your education.

If you are enhancing your global public health career by obtaining one of GPH’s certificates, you have the option of subsidizing your academic costs through student loans.

Most GPH certificate students who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents subsidize their degree through federal loan programs offered by the U.S. Department of Education. To apply, you’ll need to file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) every year in which you’d like to collect financial aid.

You can receive several types of financial aid loans through the FAFSA, depending on your eligibility:

To be eligible for federal aid you must be enrolled in a minimum of 4.5 credits each term you are requesting aid.

You can also apply for private loans if you require additional financial assistance.

International students have multiple options to assist them in attending one of the world’s most innovative and pragmatic global public health colleges.

While international students who are not U.S. permanent residents or eligible non-citizens, do not qualify for any federal direct loans, you still have a variety of options to help subsidize your GPH degree. One of the most important things to remember is that you need to start to create a plan to finance your degree before you come to campus. This can include a variety of resources some you will need to secure before your arrival and others that you will have access to as a student. It is important to know before you go, to ensure your successful completion of your degree program of choice.

Below are some valuable resources and information to help you better understand financing your degree as an international student:

Private Loan Aid

Many domestic and international students rely on loan related aid to pay for a portion of their tuition and fees. For our international students, a private lender may allow eligible borrowers to borrow up to the full Cost of Attendance. Some lenders require a U.S. based co-signer, while others do not. For more information on private loans, please contact the NYU Office of Financial Aid. To speak with a Financial Aid Counselor, please call the financial aid office at 212-998-4444 or email them at financial.aid@nyu.edu. Also, you may schedule an In-Person appointment or a Zoom appointment with an NYU StudentLink Counselor.

If you have questions about non-federal forms of aid, please contact gph.financialaid@nyu.edu.

External Funding Opportunities

Many independent organizations dedicate their efforts to finding and compiling scholarships for international students who seek to study in the United States. Please note that many external scholarships become available a full year prior to the term of entry. For example, you may need to apply in September of 2023 for aid to be awarded in September of 2024. Explore these links for further information:

Financial Education at NYU

At New York University, we want our community to feel empowered to make sound financial decisions. NYU Financial Education is committed to providing a variety of resources to help current and prospective students expand their skills and knowledge of personal finance and empower them to effectively manage their finances every day.

What is Financial Education?

Financial Education (most commonly referred to as financial literacy) is defined by the National Financial Education Council as, “Possessing the skills and knowledge on financial matters to confidently take effective action that best fulfills an individual’s personal, family and global community goals.”

Financial Education is not the same as Financial Aid, even though there are components of the two that will cross. Financial Aid is about the detailed types and amounts of student aid offered to attend college. Financial Education is about providing our students and the NYU community with the education and resources to effectively manage their finances every day.
