Public Health Scientist | Clinical Laboratory Microbiologist | Field Laboratory Epidemiologist
Emeka Iloegbu is a public health scientist specializing in Clinical Microbiology, Hematology, and Field Laboratory Epidemiology, with over 15 years of experience in global health, health emergencies, and laboratory diagnostics. He is a Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) candidate at New York University, where his dissertation research focuses on healthcare disparities and outcomes in sickle cell disease. His research spans HIV syndemics, implementation science, pandemic preparedness, and quality health system interventions.
Emeka currently serves as the Assistant Program Director of the Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) program at CUNY and an Assistant Professor at the City University of New York. He is also a Doctoral Graduate Teaching Assistant and Guest Lecturer at NYU topics including emerging infectious diseases, and bioterrorism.
In his global health work, he is the Lead Scientist for the Global Health Policy Task Force and UNHQ Health Focal Point at the World Federation of Public Health Associations (WFPHA), where he collaborates with UN agencies and NGOs on pandemic preparedness, antimicrobial resistance, and refugee health. He has played an active role in WHO pandemic treaty negotiations and the development of health emergency response frameworks.
Emeka has led field epidemiology and laboratory emergency response efforts in diverse settings, including Philippines (H5N6), Zambia (cholera outbreak response), Mexico (migrant health disease surveillance and capacity building), and the U.S. (COVID-19, Monkeypox, and Ebola responses). As a Field Research Fellow at Market Access Africa, he contributes to in country strengthening of laboratory capacity for infectious disease control across Africa.
His research focuses on syndemic interactions between HIV, non-communicable diseases, and mental health in Africa, and he leads the ISEE Lab Section on Advancing Evidence-Based Interventions for People Living with HIV/AIDS at NYU. He is also involved in developing training curricula for public health laboratory scientists, and field and laboratory epidemiologists.
