Learn new tools for examining and overcoming challenges in global health programming.
Apply tools of implementation science to the design, execution, and evaluation of evidence-based interventions in global health settings with this 15-credit program. Learn to generate interventions that maximize solutions to common challenges to effective public health programs in low- and middle-income countries so you can:
- Understand the principles of evidence-based implementation of interventions in global health settings
- Use process models and frameworks to evaluate barriers and facilitators to plan for adaptations, implementation, and sustainability
- Select implementation strategies that address and overcome bottlenecks
- Use evaluation tools to assess implementation process and outcomes
- Assess sustainability and scale-up of evidence-based implementation of interventions in resource constrained global settings
Program Outcomes
The Advanced Certificate in Implementation Science will provide participants with practical understanding of implementation research enabling them to design evidence-based interventions programs using implementation science principles, assess interventions and results. Participants will analyze barriers and facilitators of interventions, including systematically assess the results of the undertaking and other contextual specific impediments to sustainability and scalability. Finally, knowledge gained from the coursework will be applied to solve problems utilizing various principles and strategies via intervention development to improve global health programming.
Who Should Enroll?
This certificate will appeal to a diverse mix of professionals working in global health settings, including mid-career individuals (e.g., monitoring & evaluation and learning advisors, health technical advisors, program directors, grants directors, United Nations and affiliated organizations, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), governments including Ministries of Health (MoH) and/or other technical advisors). In addition, tools gained with the Advanced Certificate in Implementation Science can be applied to a range of global health topics (e.g., maternal and child health, infectious diseases, NCDs) and can apply to a range of settings (i.e., clinical, community-based, health systems…etc.). International students are strongly encouraged to apply.
Students enrolled in the NYU MPH in Community Health Science and Practice, Environmental Health, Global Health, Public Health Nutrition, Public Health Policy & Management, Social & Behavioral Sciences, and Sustainable Development Goals are eligible for this certificate. Upon completion of the MPH and the certificate, students should have a total of 52 credits. The certificate is 15 credits, but only 3 certificate courses (9 credits) may be double-counted with the MPH (46 credits, which includes 9 double-counted credits, plus 6 additional credits).
International Students who pursue the certificate with the MPH are not allowed to receive a Program Extension as the certificate is not required to complete the MPH program. Therefore, they must complete the certificate by the time they graduate from their MPH.

How Do I Apply?
All other applicants must submit applications online through SOPHAS Express, the common application for schools and programs of public health. In order to be eligible for the certificate, you must hold the following:
- Bachelor’s degree or US equivalent from an accredited institution
- Minimum 2.75 cumulative undergraduate GPA
To apply, you must submit your application as well as the following materials:
- Scanned copies of transcripts for all post-secondary education completed, regardless of whether a degree was awarded
- Resume or CV
- Personal statement of no longer than 1200 words expressing a rationale for pursuing the certificate
- 1 letter of support from either a professional or academic reference
