GCIS Symposium

Every day, nearly 300 people are victims of gun violence in the United States. Nationally, community organizations, health departments and healthcare systems are working together to reduce the devastating impact of this public health crisis.

The Global Center for Implementation Science at the NYU School of Global Public Health brought together experts from the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, NYC Health+Hospitals, Northwell Health, NYU Langone Medical Center, University of Arkansas, Northwestern University, and Bronx Rises Against Gun (B.R.A.G.) Violence on March 13th to discuss strategies for implementing and scaling Hospital-Based Violence Intervention Programs (HVIPs). A compelling research and policy agenda emerged that includes the urgent need to mobilize communities and elevate their voices, support cross-sector collaboration, invest in workforce development, and implement state and local policies that incentivize scale-up of effective solutions.

“To see individuals that used to be perpetrators of violence now being healers of that violence is immeasurable.”- Dr. Noé Romo
