Senior Global Public Health Fellow (SGPHF)

Senior Global Public Health Fellow (SGPHF)

The Senior Global Public Health Fellow will serve to support and encourage new students to adjust to the New York University School of Global Public Health and the ISEE Lab culture, and share valuable experiences with students. Through one-on-one mentoring, interactions and group meetings, fellows will serve as peer mentors, role models, and successfully advocate for the new ISEE lab students. If you are a previous ISEE lab alumni, this role may be of interest to you. Please reach out to gph.isee@nyu.edu for additional information.

Director’s message:

Joyce

Sustainable mentorship is patient, kind, and transformative. Enduring mentor-mentee relationships are those that are based on a mutual understanding,  and celebrate failures and successes alike. Each party has to be intentional and clear about their expectations. Communication should be bi-directional and mentees should feel comfortable and be encouraged to  challenge ideas of mentors to bring new perspective, complexity and multiplicity to solutions. A shared lived experience also strengthens the intergenerational bond, which may lead to stronger social support, and is important for promoting physical and mental health.

As I ponder on these two African proverbs, I am reminded of my ‘WHY” I have decided to mentor others. I am a product of a sustainable  20+ years of mentorship from expert public health professionals and I find joy in being able to pass on the gift of mentorship.

“If you want to go fast, go alone, if you want to go far, go together”

And

“It takes a village to raise a child”

We (the public health community) have a responsibility to ensure that the younger generation are nurtured and are challenged to reach new heights and allowed to flourish showcasing their optimal potential.

I challenge everyone who has managed to climb the professional ladder to also pull along others through coaching and ongoing mentorship; this is a  key ingredient for community upliftment. I am very proud of  our ISEE lab senior fellows for sharing the gift of mentorship.
