The Heart of NYU GPH

For ten years and counting, we are transforming what was a small MPH program into a world-class institution. To create GPH, tremendous forces were gathered. Stellar researchers and outstanding students were recruited. Innovative scholarship was underpinned with technology for global reach. And in a city where space is at a premium for all, 100,000 square feet was allocated by the University for a new building. Since its inception, talented individuals have powered our enterprise: Building a school of public health from the ground up.

Born of Necessity, Built for Impact

Responding to high demand, NYU established courses during the Great Depression for aspiring teachers to introduce the concepts of hygiene and health to their students. In the decades to follow, courses were added in nutrition and food studies, urban policy, environmental and community health: eventually, a Master of Public Health emerged. Moving from a single degree to a thriving school, though, required leaders and faculty from the NYU schools of medicine, dentistry, education, nursing, public policy and social work to coalesce around a shared vision. Their determination—and that of countless others who have followed—formed the interdisciplinary powerhouse that is the NYU School of Global Public Health.
