Global Liberal Studies/GPH 4+1 Programs

The School of Global Public Health (GPH) and Global Liberal Studies (GLS) offer two distinct 4+1 programs that allow students to earn both a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in GLS and a Master’s degree from GPH in less time than it would take to complete the two programs separately. The 4+1 programs include a BA/MPH (Master of Public Health) or a BA/MA (Master of Arts) option.

These 4+1 accelerated programs are designed for students with a strong commitment to global leadership and offer innovative approaches to public health study from dynamic global and interdisciplinary perspectives.

BA/MPH in Global Public Health

The BA/MPH 4+1 program is available to current GLS students entering one of the following MPH concentrations: Biostatistics, Community Health Science & Practice, Environmental Public Health Sciences, Epidemiology, Global Health, Public Health Nutrition, Public Health Policy & Management, and Social & Behavioral Sciences. Graduates of the BA/MPH program can launch their public health careers in research, practice, and service.

Up to 15 credits of GPH graduate coursework will be double counted towards the BA and the MPH. (Note: Students can complete more than 15 credits of graduate coursework during their undergraduate years, if their schedules allow.)
Students will earn a total of 159 credits: 128 credits for the BA, plus an additional 31 credits for the MPH. (A reminder: if these degrees were completed separately, the GLS BA requires 128 credits and the MPH requires 46 credits, for a total of 174 credits taken over six years.)

5-year Course Plan

  • Year 1: Student completes GLS First-Year Program.
  • Year 2: Student speaks with both GLS and GPH advisors about participation in the BA/MPH 4+1 program. In the spring of their sophomore year, the student completes the 4+1 application. Student continues GLS coursework.
  • Year 3: Student completes 9 credits of MPH coursework along with GLS coursework.
  • Year 4: Student completes 6 credits of MPH coursework along with GLS coursework.
  • Year 5: Student completes the remaining credits of MPH coursework, including a 180-hour internship.
