Policies and Procedures

Deferrals

The NYU School of Global Public Health will consider requests to defer admission for up to one year if they are made prior to the enrollment decision deadline by applicants with outstanding offers of admission.  In order to request a deferral of an offer of admission, admitted applicants must complete and submit the deferral request form by their enrollment decision deadline.   Applicants who accept their offer of admission and have paid a tuition deposit may submit a deferral request up to three weeks prior to the start of the term.

Please read the following deferral policies carefully.  Submitting a deferral request indicates an applicant’s acknowledgment that they understand and agree to abide by the below policies. If you have questions or concerns about any of these policies, please email the NYU GPH Office of Admissions for clarification before submitting a deferral request.

Deferral requests are granted at the discretion of the School of Global Public Health, and submission of the deferral request form does not constitute a confirmed deferral of admission.  Applicants who submit the form will be notified in writing within two weeks whether their deferral request is approved.

  • Unless noted otherwise in writing, any terms and conditions described in an initial offer of admission apply to a deferred offer of admission.
  • Deferral requests will only be considered up to the enrollment decision deadline date stated in the original offer of admission. Requests submitted after the enrollment deadline has passed will only be considered at the sole discretion of the GPH Office of Admissions, and the applicant may be required to reapply for admission to be reconsidered for future terms.
  • A tuition deposit will be required in order to request a deferral and secure a seat in the term to which the applicant has requested a deferral. This tuition deposit is applied toward a future tuition balance, is not an additional fee, and is non-refundable.
  • If an admitted applicant has already submitted a tuition deposit, deferral requests will be considered until three weeks before the first day of classes in the term to which the applicant has been admitted. Deferral requests submitted after this date has passed will only be considered at the sole discretion of the GPH Office of Admissions, and the applicant may be required to reapply for admission to be reconsidered for future terms.
  • All tuition deposits are non-refundable, regardless of whether a deposit was submitted before requesting a deferral or after.
  • Deferrals are granted for a maximum of one academic year from the original offer of admission. For example, an offer of admission to a Fall term may be deferred to a term no later than the following Fall. An applicant who does not enroll in the term to which the offer of admission is deferred may be required to reapply to be reconsidered for admission.
  • An offer of admission can only be deferred into the same academic program to which the original offer of admission was made. Any applicant who wishes to change program may be required to reapply for admission to the new program.
  • Unless indicated otherwise in writing, scholarship offers included in an offer of admission will also apply to an approved deferral offer of admission. Any applicable terms or conditions attached to a scholarship offer and described in the offer letter will also apply to the deferred offer.
  • Upon written request, an applicant may change their courseload status (full-time versus part-time) from their original offer of admission to a deferred offer of admission. Such changes may impact any scholarship offer made in the original offer of admission, up to and including removal of the scholarship entirely, per the terms and conditions listed in the scholarship offer.
  • Once a deferral request has been approved, it can only be reversed at the discretion of the NYU GPH Office of Admissions and upon request in writing up to three weeks before the first day of classes in the term to which the applicant has been admitted. Once a deferral request has been approved, requests to reverse the deferral and enroll in the term to which the applicant was originally admitted must be made in writing and approved by the NYU GPH Office of Admissions.
  • An applicant may only defer admission for one program and/or concentration at a time.
  • In order to effectively manage admissions and new enrollment activity, NYU GPH reserves the right to deny approval of deferral requests and to require applicants to reapply in order to be reconsidered for admission in future terms, and it may or may not be able to provide detailed explanations for its response to such requests.
  • Deferrals are granted contingent on an applicant’s agreement not to enroll in graduate level coursework, either at NYU or another institution, during the deferral period. Any coursework undertaken during the deferral period will not be transferable to the NYU School of Global Public Health.

Before requesting a deferral, please make sure you read, understand and agree to adhere to the deferral policies described above.  In order to request a deferral, please complete and submit the Deferral Request Form.

Concentration Change Requests

Pre-Matriculation Masters Concentration Change Request Procedures

The NYU School of Global Public Health Office of Admissions & Enrollment will facilitate concentration change requests for incoming students only (students who have not started coursework) prior to the first day of Fall semester classes. Students who have matriculated (started coursework) must contact their GPH advisor in the Office of Student Affairs to request a concentration change.

To request a concentration change, admitted applicants must complete and submit the Concentration Change Request Form at least ten (10) business days prior to the first day of Fall semester classes.

Submitting a concentration change request indicates an applicant’s acknowledgment that they understand and agree to abide by the below requirements and process. If you have questions, please email the NYU GPH Office of Admissions (gph.admissions@nyu.edu) for clarification before submitting a request.

This process does not govern applicants who have been denied admission to the NYU School of Global Public Health, nor does it apply to applicants seeking a change in course load status (full-time versus part-time).  Upon written request, an applicant may change their course load status from their original offer of admission. Course load changes may impact the scholarship offer made in the original offer of admission per the terms and conditions listed in the scholarship offer.

Concentration change requests are granted at the discretion of the NYU School of Global Public Health.  In order to effectively manage admissions and new enrollment activity, NYU GPH may exercise its discretion to deny Concentration Change Requests and require applicants to either remain in the concentration for which they were originally admitted to NYU GPH or reapply in order to be reconsidered for admission in their newly desired concentration for a future term.

Guidelines and Procedure:

  • In order to process this request, please complete and submit the GPH Program Change Request Form. (Note that you will be required to log into the form using your NYU Net ID and password, just as you logged into the Application Status Portal during the admission process).
  • Unless noted otherwise in writing, any terms and conditions described in an initial offer of admission apply to an offer of admission for a new concentration.
  • Scholarship offers included in the initial offer of admission may be affected if a Concentration Change is approved. Any applicable terms or conditions attached to a scholarship offer, if affected by a Concentration Change, will be provided in writing.
  • Concentration Change Requests submitted during the admission process, or before the start of the semester, will only be considered if submitted at least ten (10) business days in advance of the start of a students’ first Fall semester and are considered at the sole discretion of the GPH Office of Admissions and the Department Chair. Requests submitted within ten (10) days of matriculation or after matriculation are handled by a student’s Program Advisor in the Office of Student Affairs, in partnership with the Chair of the department the student is requesting to join.
  • An applicant may request one concentration change by filling out and submitting the Concentration Change Request Form. Applicants will first be notified in writing that their Concentration Change Request has been received by the Department, via email. Following the review of the original application and the Concentration Change Request Form by the Department Chair, the decision (approval or denial) will be provided to the applicant in writing, via email. If the Concentration Change Request was approved, the applicant will also receive a revised written offer of admission that lists the new concentration. If a Concentration Change Request is not approved, it does not affect the applicant’s original offer of admission to the initial concentration.
  • Any subsequent change requests submitted before the start of the first semester will require a student to submit the Concentration Change Request Form and meet with a member of the GPH Office of Admissions and Enrollment to discuss the intended program of study to ensure students select the concentration that best suits their interests and career goals. Following this conversation, the respective Department Chair will evaluate the student’s application for review and make a final decision on the change.
  • Once the semester begins, students work with their Program Advisor in the GPH Office of Student Affairs to discuss any subsequent concentration change requests.
