Deferral Policies & Procedures

The NYU School of Global Public Health will consider requests to defer admission for up to one year if they are made prior to the enrollment decision deadline by applicants with outstanding offers of admission.  In order to request a deferral of an offer of admission, admitted applicants must complete and submit the deferral request form by their enrollment decision deadline.   Applicants who accept their offer of admission and have paid a tuition deposit may submit a deferral request up to three weeks prior to the start of the term.

Please read the following deferral policies carefully.  Submitting a deferral request indicates an applicant’s acknowledgment that they understand and agree to abide by the below policies. If you have questions or concerns about any of these policies, please email the NYU GPH Office of Admissions for clarification before submitting a deferral request.

Deferral requests are granted at the discretion of the School of Global Public Health, and submission of the deferral request form does not constitute a confirmed deferral of admission.  Applicants who submit the form will be notified in writing within two weeks whether their deferral request is approved.

NYU GPH Deferral Policies

  • Unless noted otherwise in writing, any terms and conditions described in an initial offer of admission apply to a deferred offer of admission.

  • Deferral requests will only be considered up to the enrollment decision deadline date stated in the original offer of admission. Requests submitted after the enrollment deadline has passed will only be considered at the sole discretion of the GPH Office of Admissions, and the applicant may be required to reapply for admission to be reconsidered for future terms.
  • A tuition deposit will be required in order to request a deferral and secure a seat in the term to which the applicant has requested a deferral. This tuition deposit is applied toward a future tuition balance, is not an additional fee, and is non-refundable.

  • If an admitted applicant has already submitted a tuition deposit, deferral requests will be considered until three weeks before the first day of classes in the term to which the applicant has been admitted. Deferral requests submitted after this date has passed will only be considered at the sole discretion of the GPH Office of Admissions, and the applicant may be required to reapply for admission to be reconsidered for future terms.

  • All tuition deposits are non-refundable, regardless of whether a deposit was submitted before requesting a deferral or after.

  • Deferrals are granted for a maximum of one academic year from the original offer of admission. For example, an offer of admission to a Fall term may be deferred to a term no later than the following Fall. An applicant who does not enroll in the term to which the offer of admission is deferred may be required to reapply to be reconsidered for admission.

  • An offer of admission can only be deferred into the same academic program to which the original offer of admission was made. Any applicant who wishes to change program may be required to reapply for admission to the new program.

  • Unless indicated otherwise in writing, scholarship offers included in an offer of admission will also apply to an approved deferral offer of admission. Any applicable terms or conditions attached to a scholarship offer and described in the offer letter will also apply to the deferred offer.

  • Upon written request, an applicant may change their courseload status (full-time versus part-time) from their original offer of admission to a deferred offer of admission. Such changes may impact any scholarship offer made in the original offer of admission, up to and including removal of the scholarship entirely, per the terms and conditions listed in the scholarship offer.

  • Once a deferral request has been approved, it can only be reversed at the discretion of the NYU GPH Office of Admissions and upon request in writing up to three weeks before the first day of classes in the term to which the applicant has been admitted. Once a deferral request has been approved, requests to reverse the deferral and enroll in the term to which the applicant was originally admitted must be made in writing and approved by the NYU GPH Office of Admissions.

  • An applicant may only defer admission for one program and/or concentration at a time.

  • In order to effectively manage admissions and new enrollment activity, NYU GPH reserves the right to deny approval of deferral requests and to require applicants to reapply in order to be reconsidered for admission in future terms, and it may or may not be able to provide detailed explanations for its response to such requests.

  • Deferrals are granted contingent on an applicant’s agreement not to enroll in graduate level coursework, either at NYU or another institution, during the deferral period. Any coursework undertaken during the deferral period will not be transferable to the NYU School of Global Public Health.
