Hosted by the Department of Epidemiology
Health is a challenging construct and has been framed in many ways, each with its own limitations. Disease-based models are particularly problematic. While at the World Health Organization (WHO), Dr. John Beard led work to frame a global public health response to population aging framed, instead, around the functional ability of people to be and do the things they value. This framework has influenced policy development in many countries and now underpins the UN Decade of Healthy Ageing 2021-2030. Since leaving WHO, he has continued work on intrinsic capacity - a central measure of this model that describes all the individual level components of functioning. In this talk, Dr. Beard will explore how moving from dichotomous disease-based outcomes to continuous measures grounded in the lived experience of people as they age can create transformational opportunities for research, policy development and clinical practice.
