Statement on Ukraine from Dean Cheryl Healton

With each passing day since Russia’s internationally condemned invasion of Ukraine, we’re witnessing yet another history-making public health crisis -- even as the coronavirus pandemic continues. Millions of Ukrainians have been forced to flee, seeking refuge and safety in neighboring nations, resulting in what could be the most significant humanitarian crisis in Europe since World War II.

We commend the extraordinary measures being taken globally by both the public and private sectors, showing solidarity with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the Ukrainian people, and offering food, clothing and financial support.

We also keep foremost in our thoughts and prayers our colleagues at HealthRight International, who have operated in Ukraine since 2005 with a staff of more than 100 dedicated Ukrainian nationals, working tirelessly to strengthen the public health system and increase access to quality health services in every region.

Many GPH faculty who have conducted research in Ukraine also have public health colleagues there, whose lives are at risk.

If you’re interested in learning more about the impact of this crisis on our colleagues in Ukraine, and their fellow citizens and families, please join our webinar on Monday, March 7th at 4:00 pm.

If you’re looking for ways to contribute, please consider donating to organizations like HealthRight that are on the ground in Ukraine, making a difference every day under difficult circumstances, working to safeguard the public and advance the health of vulnerable communities.
