“The greatest perk is the opportunity to give back to a community I have a deep personal connection with,” says Ami Fall (GPH '26) of her experience working to revitalize a maternal health center in Senegal this summer. “With my father from Senegal, this work is not only professionally meaningful but also personally significant, allowing me to contribute to strengthening maternal and neonatal health in a place that feels like home.”
A Bañuelos Family Changemaker Fellow and Masters of Public Health student, Ami designed this project independently, working with local leaders in the rural community of Diokoul Diawrigne and under the guidance of NYU GPH faculty. Through her professional network, she connected with the Baobab Institute for Health and Development, an international organization that promotes local ownership of health and development issues in Africa, and proposed the initiative as an internship and partnership opportunity.
NYU News spoke with her about her career plans and what she finds rewarding about this work, which took her from New York to Senegal this summer.
