Sam Fullhart is an Assistant Professor/Faculty Fellow at NYU's Center for Bioethics. Before coming to NYU, he was a Teaching Assistant Professor in the Philosophy, Politics, and Economics Program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He completed his PhD in Philosophy at Princeton University in 2024.
He works on topics in ethics, philosophy of action, rationality, and PPE. Much of his research is concerned with whether and how work in ethics and other areas of normative philosophy can be action guiding. That is, to what extent can abstract principles about what we ought to do guide flesh and blood human agents in a messy world where we face a bewildering array of options, their consequences are difficult or impossible to predict, and we often cannot rely on ourselves to follow through on our decisions? Much of his inspiration comes from work in the philosophy of science on the uses and abuses of idealized models, quantification, and controlled experiments.
