The Language of Epidemiology in Science and Society: On the Occasion of the 7th Edition of 'A Dictionary of Epidemiology'

November 12
1:30-2:30pm
708 Broadway, Room 801

Hosted by the Department of Epidemiology

A conversation on the language that epidemiology and the other health, life, and social sciences use to dialogue in science and society on issues of social, clinical, biological, or methodological relevance.

Dr. Miquel Porta is a physician, epidemiologist and scholar from Barcelona who works on molecular, clinical and environmental epidemiology of pancreatic cancer and other diseases, and has promoted the integration of biological, clinical, and environmental knowledge in research and teaching internationally.

The Unit of Dr. Porta at IMIM in Barcelona has a distinguished record of globally recognized research on the clinical and molecular epidemiology of pancreatic cancer, with a focus on the role of gene-environment interactions, including endocrine-disruptors and other environmental pollutants. They have also published extensively on the uses of biomarkers to assess the impact of environmental factors on human health. As a response to the last pandemic, they raised (and seek) funds and partners to assess the influence of environmental pollutants on SARS-CoV-2 infection, vaccine response, and COVID-19 severity and prognosis.

Dr. Porta has taught at several global institutions, such as NYU, UNC, Harvard, and Imperial College London. He is the current editor of 'A dictionary of epidemiology' (Oxford University Press, 2008, 2014, 2026). He is also coauthor of other books.

This event is open to the NYU community for in-person attendance. The general public may RSVP for virtual attendance.
