Public Health Frontlines: Navigation and Adjustments in “Safety-Net” Healthcare

February 12
5-6:30pm
708 Broadway, Room 801

Hosted by the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences

Since 2020—and especially in the past year—the public health profession has endured widespread challenges to how it is perceived and understood. These changes are forcing new approaches to how health is defined, its upstream causes, and how we, as practitioners, might meaningfully address population health. For public health students seeking to improve community health, healthcare practice, and/or contribute to science, it can be hard to know where to focus one’s efforts and how to make those efforts last. By applying a “use case” lens of OBGYN services across NYC’s safety net health system, Sarah Sisco, MPH, MSSW, Assistant Vice President, Women’s Health Operations, Division of Clinical Services Operations, NYC Health + Hospitals will cover the current and cascading challenges of maternal morbidity and mortality, coupled with the social determinants of health. We will discuss established tactics to prevent disease and promote health; limitations and emergent needs; and how the public health profession can cultivate skillsets and innovation for the current and future state.

This event is open to the NYU Community only (current students, faculty, and staff) for in person attendance. The general public will only be allowed to participate virtually.
