Global Public Health is excited to offer more opportunities for our graduate students to study abroad to immerse themselves in new cultures and learn about current health crises in global settings.

Deposit is $500 and non-refundable​.

Students should NOT purchase their flights until instructed to do so. All courses must meet the minimum number of enrollment for the program to take place. 

GPH-GU 9240 PERSPECTIVES IN GLOBAL MENTAL HEALTH

Program dates: August 6 - 17
Depart: August 17 EVENING or August 18
 
Program fee: $1200 - Includes housing, airport transfers in Ghana, activities and events, international health insurance, some meals. Students are responsible for their airfare, some meals, and visa fees, if needed. All students will require a Yellow Fever Vaccination in order to obtain a visa. Housing will be shared doubles at a hotel that includes breakfast. 

This course provides exposure to this increasingly relevant public health challenge from a global perspective, with a particular focus on the epidemiology, risk factors and consequences, individual- and population-level approaches to treatment and prevention, and delivery of care for mental health problems in different settings worldwide. This course will challenge students to think critically about the existing literature in this area and about the role of culture, context and stigma in shaping public health responses to mental disorders.

  • Meet with clinicians at Pantang Psychiatric Hospital to learn about biomedical treatment availability for mental illness in Ghana

  • Visit to herbal medicine clinic and spiritual healer to learn about alternative mental health treatment

Trip to Tamale (1-hour flight):

  • Meet with Director Peter Yaro at the main offices of Basic Needs Ghana, a mental health advocacy organization dedicated to increasing access to community-based mental health care

  • Visit at Shekhinah Clinic, which provides medical care and a food program for individuals with mental illness.

Program day-to-day schedules and syllabus content are subject to change and will be distributed in advance of departure. Summer courses may require online modules or advanced readings to be completed prior to travel.

Students should make sure they are up to date with their immunizations and contract NYU Travel Medicine to see if any vaccinations are required before travel.
