What are the application deadlines?

Is there an application fee?

When applying to GPH’s Master of Bioethics program, SOPHAS charges a fee structure based on how many programs you apply to; please consult SOPHAS’s FAQs page for more information. New York University does not charge or collect any supplementary application fee.

How long will it take to complete the degree?

How long it takes to complete the degree depends on whether you are enrolled full-time or part-time – learn more on the Master of Arts in Bioethics Admissions page.

Are dual degree options available?

Students enrolled in the M.D. program at the NYU School of Medicine may apply for the M.D./M.A. in Bioethics program, which allows students to complete both degrees in five years of full-time study. Medical Students in the dual degree program usually take a year off between their third and fourth medical school years to complete all or most of the coursework and fulfill the Practicum requirement for the Bioethics Masters degree. Any remaining Practicum coursework can be completed concurrently with their 4th year clinical clerkships.

How much does the program cost? Is financial aid available?

Note that there is a special competitive scholarship fund for medical students. For more information about these scholarships, please contact the Director, Matthew Liao, PhD at bioethics@nyu.edu. Decisions regarding tuition assistance will be made by May 15th on a first-come, first-served basis.

Is housing available?

NYU offers an extremely limited amount of housing to graduate students. The program expects that the vast majority of graduate students will secure off-campus housing, which is generally cheaper and more flexible than NYU housing. The NYU Office of Off-Campus Housing can help newly admitted students navigate the New York City rental market.

The Center for Bioethics

The foundation of the MA in Bioethics degree is the NYU Center for Bioethics, launched in September 2007 with a Chair endowed by Dr. Arthur Zitrin, who for over 40 years was a prime mover in ethics education at the NYU Medical Center.
