Please join the Department of Global Health for this exciting lecture featuring Joanna Pozen.
Joanna Pozen is an international human rights lawyer and public health specialist. She is the Director of the Health and Human Rights certificate program and an Assistant Research Scientist at GPH. Until recently, she also served as Program Director of the Health and Human Rights Initiative at HealthRight International and an Adjunct Associate Research Scholar at Columbia University’s Medical Center. In addition, she is co-Executive Director of Restore Health, a non-profit offering innovative solutions for women and girls suffering from obstetric fistula. This talk will explore the human rights framework, and the right to health, as a tool for assessing and improving health outcomes through two case studies. First, it will apply a human rights framework in order to assess equity among innovations in sexual and reproductive health in terms of whether these innovations reach the most marginalized. Second, it will explore the efficacy of Rwanda’s Gacaca courts in terms of improving mental health among participants in light of the government’s duty to fulfill the right to health. Finally, the presentation will turn to health and human rights at GPH, and possibilities for greater engagement beyond the current Advanced Certificate.
