In celebration of Women’s History Month, The Department of Biostatistics at NYU GPH proudly hosted the Women in Statistics Conversation Panel in March– a dynamic and inspiring event that brought together accomplished female leaders from academia, healthcare, and industry to share their journeys and insights with students and faculty. The panel served as both a celebration of women’s contributions to the field and a candid exploration of the challenges and triumphs that shape their careers.

Each panelist offered a unique perspective on navigating the world of statistics—from finding their footing in the field to making impactful contributions in public health, tech, and research. Many reflected on the nonlinear paths that led them to where they are today, emphasizing the importance of being open to new opportunities and embracing uncertainty.

A recurring theme throughout the conversation was the experience of imposter syndrome—a feeling familiar to many in the room. Panelists shared how they’ve learned to reframe self-doubt as a sign of growth, rather than a weakness, and encouraged students to seek support, speak up, and trust in their abilities.

Mentorship and community emerged as central to career development. Panelists spoke about the importance of finding mentors who not only provide guidance but also advocate for their mentees. They also highlighted the value of peer support and building professional networks early on.

In discussing their current roles, panelists illuminated the wide range of opportunities that exist for statisticians today—from influencing health policy and advancing clinical research to working at the intersection of data and innovation. They encouraged students to stay curious, develop strong communication skills, and explore interdisciplinary work.

The event concluded with an engaging Q&A session where students asked thoughtful questions about career transitions, navigating bias in the workplace, and maintaining work-life balance. The panelists responded with insight and authenticity, offering encouragement and practical advice grounded in their own experiences.

The Women in Statistics Conversation Panel was not only an inspiring showcase of leadership and resilience—it was a powerful reminder of the importance of representation, support, and community in shaping the future of biostatistics.
