The Center for Anti-racism, Social Justice, & Public Health (CASJPH) was pleased to host their 3rd Annual Symposium, where researchers, practitioners, and community leaders came together to explore innovative strategies for advancing health equity. Centered around this year's theme of Strength in Unity: Sustaining Equity Through Knowledge and Action, this event fostered dialogue, partnerships and actionable solutions to dismantle systemic inequities and promote justice in public health.

The symposium opened with a conversation between Drs. Saba Rouhani and Anna-Michelle McSorley about the need to continue the conversation on book bans in the U.S. They explored the rising number of book bans and examined the patterns and implications within the country. In discussing commonly challenged books, the speakers delved into the common themes related to LGBTQ+ identities, race, and historical and contemporary experiences of diverse communities. Through their expertise, audience members gained insight into how book bans affect education, access to information and health equity.

A second session featured a stimulating panel discussion focused on the sustainability of research partnerships and programs. The featured panelists listed below specifically explored the role of harnessing the power of systems science and community engagement.

  • Celine Chan, MPH, NYU Grossman School of Medicine, Department of Population Health, Section for Health Equity
  • Lan Doan, PhD, Assistant Professor, NYU Grossman School of Medicine, Department of Population Health, Section for Health Equity
  • Rachel Thompson, MS, Graduate School of Public Health & Health Policy, Environmental and Planetary Health Sciences
  • Stella Yi, PhD, Associate Professor, NYU Grossman School of Medicine, Department of Population Health, Section for Health Equity

Closing out the event was a poster presentation and reception, where students from the center proudly presented their research and networked with audience members, speakers and their peers.
