Hypertension and Global Health: Addressing the Leading Cause of Preventable Mortality

January 28
2-3pm
708 Broadway, Room 801

Hosted by the Department of Epidemiology

Hypertension is the leading cause of preventable death worldwide, yet rates of detection, treatment, and control remain unacceptably low. Although it is readily treatable with inexpensive medications—and likely preventable through effective population-level strategies—it has received disproportionately little attention from research funders.

In this seminar, Dr. Lawrence Appel will review the fundamentals of hypertension, including its etiology, epidemiology, prevention, and treatment, and will highlight emerging and innovative approaches to improving hypertension prevention and control globally, with a particular focus on the Resolve to Save Lives initiative.

Please note: If you would like to attend in-person and are an external guest or an alum without an active NYU ID, you must RSVP by January 21, 2026.
