How can I check the status of my application?
All applicants are emailed instructions on how to create an account and log in to their NYU GPH Application Status portal. The portal outlines which documents we have received and which, if any, remain outstanding. The portal is the best place to check for the most up-to-date information on the status of your application.
-
Can I transfer credits from another institution?
NYU GPH accepts up to 9 transfer credits. Transfer credits are evaluated on a case-by-case basis after students are enrolled in the program. Credits cannot be transferred if they were already counted toward another degree. Learn more about our transfer credit policy here.
To be considered:
- transfer credits must be from an accredited institution
- there must be evidence that the credits are at the graduate level
- you must have earned a grade of C- or better in the course
- you must provide an official transcript of the course and final grade along with the course syllabus
-

I already have a Master's in Public Health; can I apply to GPH for another MPH?
Any applicant with a conferred Master of Public Health (MPH) degree from any institution, domestic or international, is not eligible to apply or enroll in the MPH program. However, they may apply to and enroll in non-MPH graduate level programs (MA, MS, Advanced Certificate) or doctoral (PhD, DrPH) programs at NYU GPH. Learn more about this policy here.
-
Can courses be waived?
Decisions regarding waiving courses are made by program faculty on an individual student basis. Waiving-out does not reduce the number of credits required for graduation; another course must be substituted for any course that is waived.
-
If admitted, can I defer my start date?
Once admitted, you can request a deferral by emailing gph.admissions@nyu.edu. Deferrals are granted for 1 year beyond the initial date of admission to a program. Students who request a deferral must pay the non-refundable $500 enrollment deposit before a deferral is granted.
-
If admitted, where should I send my final transcripts?

You may request an official, electronic copy of your final transcript or WES course by course evaluation for foreign institutions, be sent directly from your institution to gph.admissions@nyu.edu. Financial Aid
-
When do I find out if I've been awarded a GPH merit-based scholarship?
Applicants awarded a scholarship will be notified of the scholarship award at the same time they are notified of their admission to their program.
-
Are research or graduate assistantships available to help offset the cost of the program?
The NYU MPH program has no formal research or graduate assistantships to offer to students.
-
How much loan aid I will need?
Please contact the NYU Office of Financial Aid to connect with a financial aid counselor. They will be able to assist you in understanding loan aid and how much you need for your situation.
-
What is the cost of tuition?
NYU charges tuition on a per-credit basis. The per-term cost of a part-time student will likely be lower than that of a full-time student, although the overall costs for the entire degree may be the same. Each term’s tuition is billed at registration and due at the beginning of that term.
To calculate the estimated tuition cost for an entire degree, you will need to take into account the total number of credits required to graduate. Programs at GPH require 32 (MA), 46 (MPH and MS) or 42 (DrPH) credits to complete. If you add a certificate to your degree program, or are enrolled in a dual degree program, your credit requirements may differ.
Using the tuition calculator found on the website of the NYU Office of the Bursar, you can calculate the tuition and fee cost of a term at current rates. Please keep in mind that these rates are adjusted each academic year and may differ should you enroll at NYU GPH in a future term.
International
-
Can I submit international transcripts as part of my SOPHAS application?
No. If you attended a foreign school or earned your degree outside of the United States or Canada, you are required to submit your foreign coursework to the World Education Services (WES) evaluation service for a course-by-course US equivalency report. This report should then be sent directly to SOPHAS from WES. You can request electronic WES ICAP course-by-course evaluations directly through the application.
-
I submitted my application but I am still waiting for my WES report. What should I do?
- First, ensure that you requested WES to send the evaluation directly to SOPHAS per the instructions provided by SOPHAS and WES.
- The SOPHAS application will continue to process documents and attach them to your application after submission. If the evaluation is transmitted to NYU during the review period, it will be attached to your application for the faculty to consider as part of their review.
- NYU GPH cannot accept unofficial copies of foreign transcripts in lieu of the WES evaluation. Please do not send such documents to the admissions office. We are also unable to accept mailed hard copies of WES evaluations; all evaluations should be sent directly from WES to SOPHAS.
- If you feel that SOPHAS is missing a WES evaluation submitted by WES on your behalf, please contact SOPHAS customer service by phone at 617-612-2090 or by email at sophasinfo@liaisoncas.com.
-
What visa will I need to study at GPH?
Most international students who study at NYU GPH do so under an F-1 student visa. However, there are other visa types that allow study at NYU. If admitted, the NYU Office of Global Services will work with you to help you apply for and obtain the appropriate visa to begin your studies at NYU GPH.
-
Will NYU issue me a student visa?
If admitted to the program, the NYU Office of International Students and Scholars will work with you on obtaining the necessary and appropriate visa to undertake the program. Please note that international students entering the United States on an F-1 student visa are only eligible to pursue full-time study.
-
Does NYU GPH accept USMLE or ECFMG scores?
No.
-
If my transcripts are not in English, do I need to have them translated?
Yes. Any transcripts not in English must be translated by a professional, certified translator. The translation must be sent in a sealed envelope to our program office as well as official, sealed copies of the original transcripts as issued by the institution.
-
What do I do if my institution will not issue official transcripts?
If your institution does not issue transcripts, you must submit a letter in a sealed envelope from the institution stating its policy. Only then will we consider accepting a copy of a transcript, certified by an appropriate embassy or consulate in the institution’s country.
PhD
-
Will I have to interview as part of my application?
Selected candidates may be invited to interview by the admissions committee. If candidates are not in the NYC area and unable to interview in person, interviews may be conducted by telephone or via Zoom.
-
Can I be awarded an MPH while pursuing the PhD?
No. As a CEPH-accredited program, the NYU Master of Public Health degree adheres to specific criteria governing credit requirements, competencies and culminating experiences. The doctoral program is not designed to accommodate all of the requirements for completion of the MPH degree.
-
Do I need to identify a faculty member to work with in order to be considered?
The PhD application asks prospective students to identify NYU faculty members with whom the applicant shares research interests. Prospective students are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the research interests of faculty prior to applying and to identify ways in which NYU can support your research interests. Including specific faculty in your application does not constitute a binding commitment to work with those faculty if accepted, but helps the department better understand how the program may fit in with your academic and/or professional goals.
-
Can I schedule a departmental visit?
The Office of Admissions welcomes visits from prospective doctoral students who wish to discuss the admission process or application to the program – see how to schedule your visit in advance on our Connect with Us page.
As the PhD application asks prospective students to identify NYU faculty members with whom they share research interests, you are also welcome to contact individual faculty members with whom you are interested in working to ask for a meeting.
DrPH
-
What is a DrPH degree and how is it different from a PhD?
The Doctor of Public Health degree is the highest professional degree awarded in the field of public health. It is an advanced practice degree for public health professionals who want to move up to major leadership positions in public health. A PhD is a research-oriented degree, and prepares students for careers in research and academia. Learn more about the differences here.
-
Can I work full-time while in the program?
The program is designed primarily for working professionals. Most classes are offered late afternoon and evenings, but some classes are held during the day. Students should be prepared to adjust their work schedules when necessary.
It is critical that students have the full support of their workplace for pursuing the degree. Completing a doctoral degree requires a much greater investment of time and energy than a master’s program. Successful applicants will be able to demonstrate that they have the support of their workplace.
-
Is the program offered in an online format?
While some courses are offered online, most courses are in-person only, and the expectation is that students will be present on-campus during the coursework phase, with periodic visits as needed during the Applied Practice Experience, qualifying exam, and dissertation stages.
