September is Hunger Action Month, to raise awareness about the crises of hunger and food insecurity that affect all corners of the globe. Food insecurity is a “lack of consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life,” and COVID-19 has only exacerbated it. Hunger Free America reports that in the U.S., 40% of children and 18% of adults are currently experiencing food insecurity. GPH's Nutrition Without Borders club encourages us all to take action against hunger and reduce these numbers.
How can you take action?
Volunteer and donate to hunger organizations such as the following:
- Hunger Free America
- Feeding America
- City Harvest
- Action Against Hunger
- Local Farmers Markets
Advocate:
- Support a 15% increase in SNAP (formerly known at food stamps) in the next stimulus bill
- Sign a petition to support the HEROES Act, which includes an increase of SNAP funding
- Support funding for school district nutrition departments
Visit the Hunger Free America and Feeding America websites for great resources to learn more about hunger.
Last but not least...VOTE!
Nutrition Without Borders
The School of Global Public Health’s first student club dedicated to public health nutrition has been engaging the New York community since 2016. Founded in response to the World Food Programme’s “Counting the Beans” exhibit in the GPH student lounge, the club has taken an interdisciplinary approach to increase student involvement in domestic and global nutrition issues through advocacy, research, volunteering, and outreach. The club offers its members a platform for integrating their studies with their interests in public health nutrition and has a dedicated and active member base from a variety of concentrations, including public health nutrition, epidemiology, public health management, and global health.
