Non-profit Sector

People meeting and writing on a white board

Non-profit organizations play a critical role in public health by providing additional health services that government agencies and private businesses fail to address.

The non-profit sector provides solutions for health issues related to infectious diseases, public safety, environmental hazards and disparities in health care that threaten the well-being of communities around the world.

United Nations (UN)

While the UN is best known for peacekeeping, conflict prevention, and humanitarian aid, there are several other ways the UN contributes to public health. From sustainable development and energy renewal to refugee protection and disaster relief, the UN focuses on a wide range of issues to help create a more unified world. Working for the UN can range from serving as a foreign aid worker that helps Syrian refugees to work as a program director in New York developing a global operations strategy.

Nongovernmental Organizations (NGOs)

In a global, interconnected world, international nongovernmental organizations play an important role in unifying the overarching goals of the public health industry. Besides the UN, there are a plethora of finely focused niche organizations involved and passionate about specific public health matters (e.g., diseases, human rights, healthcare infrastructure, etc.).

Depending on the interests of public health students and professionals, fulfilling jobs are available within numerous consumer NGOs and voluntary health agencies.

Philanthropic Organizations & Foundations

Foundations are non-profit corporations or charitable trusts that make grants to organizations, institutions, or individuals for charitable purposes such as science, education, culture, and religion. They have close working relationships with non-profit organizations and government agencies in many different sectors (e.g., public health, mental health, social services, housing, schools, child development, etc.).

Research, Policy Institutes & Think Tanks

There are a large number of think tanks, policy institutes, and research organizations with a focus on domestic and foreign policy issues around public health. These organizations are often supported by contracts from the government, foundations, and private businesses. Think tanks, in the most traditional sense, are considered as non-partisan organizations, which employ interdisciplinary approaches to finding long-term solutions to public health policy-related issues. Some of these organizations may be viewed more as advocacy groups that promote a particular agenda; others may be more similar to private sector consulting firms or academic institutions. In addition to their research efforts, many research institutes produce major publications or organize professional conferences, lectures, and policy forums.

Academia & Continuing Education

College and university instructors educate students interested in public health careers and prepare them for real-world situations. Public health academics usually work in universities or colleges of further education, setting up research investigations to address specific public health issues and teaching about public health theories and practice.

The first step towards a position in Academia is becoming a research assistant, working in research projects as part of a team. The research project work may also contribute towards a doctorate or advanced degree (e.g., Ph.D., DrPH, MD, DDS, RN, etc.). See also our GPH Centers, Labs & Initiatives.
