Is this program free?

The Pathways into Quantitative Aging Research summer program is completely free. Students will not be required to pay for anything to participate in the program. Travel to and from New York City will be covered and participants will receive a $5,000 stipend to support their expenses during the six week time period.

I’m a senior, graduating this year, am I still eligible for this program?

Yes you are! Recent college graduates who are considering graduate school are eligible.

How many students will be selected to participate in the PQAR program?

Each summer we will be inviting 12 students to participate in the summer program.

What are the necessary skills for this program? How much experience in biostatistics/coding/ data science is required?

Students should be interested in quantitative fields, such as statistics, mathematics, computer science, data science. They are not required to be majoring in these fields, just to have taken some courses and to have demonstrated strong interest.

What kind of research will the students conduct?

Students will work on projects in aging related research such as Alzheimer’s disease. They will use statistical and computational methods to analyze data to address scientific and medical questions in areas of aging related research.

What is the time commitment for this program?

The summer program will take place for six weeks. The summer 2025 program dates are from June 9, 2025- July 18, 2025. Students will arrive and move into NYU dorms on Sunday, June 8. They will be required to leave the dorms and return home on Saturday, July 19. As a note, the program will arrive travel for students.

When are applications due? When will I be notified if I have been accepted to the program?

The PQAR application is due on Monday, February 3, 2025. We will begin to notify participants in March 2025.

Can I apply for the program if I have a valid student visa?

Unfortunately, you are not eligible. We must abide by the NIH regulations, which require that participants be US citizens or permanent residents.

I'm worried my recommendation may not submitted before the deadline, will this effect my application in any way?

No. We first encourage you to submit the question portion of your application as soon as possible.
However, in order to fully evaluate your application we would like to review your recommendations. Using the application portal, send reminders to your recommenders to submit their recommendations.

A course I want to take is taking place at the same time of the summer program. Is it possible to take a course during the summer program?

Unfortunately, you can not take a course during the summer program. The summer program is intensive six weeks, where students are constantly engaged in coursework, research and programmatic activities. While the workload is manageable, it is discouraged to have any other commitments.

Can I work (remotely, research etc) during the summer program?

Unfortunately, you can not work during the summer program. We recognize students may have a financial need during the summer months and will offer a $5000 stipend.

I'm from NYC, do I have to stay in the dorms?

Yes! The PQAR summer program provides all 12 students with housing in the NYU dorms. We place PQAR students in the dorms to have close access to campus, as the programming requires students to be campus from 9:00 am - 4:00 pm on average. In addition to the technical and professional development skills you will gain during the program, the relationships and time spent with your cohort are equally beneficial.
