The 2018-2019 Ebola Outbreak Response in North Kivu, Democratic Republic of Congo

February 06
12-1:30pm
Online

Hosted by the NYU GPH Department of Global & Environmental Health and the Practice Office

This webinar is the first of a series of webinars on Public Health in Conflict-Affected Settings.

This year marked an increase in violent conflicts, surpassing levels not seen since World War II. The concurrent humanitarian crises unfolding globally, including, but not limited to those in the Middle East, Eastern Europe and in a number of African countries, underscore the urgency of robust responses. These responses must address public health needs associated with these crises, including the indescriminate loss of civilian life, the destruction of health infrastructure, the threat of infectious diseases, and shortage of food and essential supplies, all of which disproportionately impact marginalized communities. These protracted crises have significant implications for the field of global health.

This webinar series will begin with a retrospective, deep-drive into the public health response to the 2018-2020 Ebola outbreak in North Kivu, DRC. Subsequent webinars will focus on more recent, ongoing conflicts that are affecting millions of individuals globally. This first webinar will feature Stewart Simonson, former Representative at the United Nations (UN) and former Head of the WHO Office at the UN, who was directly involved in the North Kivu response.
