The College of Global Public Health welcomes the new Associate Faculty Carlos Chirinos, Clinical Music and Global Health Associate Professor, who will be collaborating with the Global Health program and curate a series of talks exploring how music can inspire public conversations about health and contribute to community engagement in disease prevention and recovery during health crises.
In this first talk, GPH welcomes Iskwé, an Indigenous pop and electronic music singer from Canada who received a Juno Award nomination (Canadian Grammy Award) for Indigenous Music Album of the Year in 2018 for her second album The Fight Within. Her debut single "Nobody Knows," produced by The Darcys and featured in the Netflix series Between, captivated audiences by turning a stark spotlight on the more than 1200 missing and murdered Indigenous women in Canada.
In this conversation and unplugged music performance, Professor Chirinos and Iskwé will discuss how music has helped her advocate for suicide prevention among indigenous people in Canada, gender equity and the role of language, culture and music in public health.
