Explaining Change and Stasis in Alcohol Use Behaviors Using Systems-Based Modeling

December 12
11am-1pm
Kimmel Center, Rooms 905/907

This symposium will showcase new interdisciplinary research that uses a systems-based perspective to examine the dynamics of alcohol use behaviors in communities. The symposium will introduce several agent-based models, each representing a particular disciplinary perspective on the mechanisms that underpin drinking behaviors. The models are brought together within a single conceptual framework that, together with a common set of computational tools, enables the different perspectives to be compared and, ultimately, integrated into a unified systems perspective. The symposium will describe the framework and tools and demonstrate how they can be used across multiple disciplines to offer evidenced, mechanism-driven explanations of how alcohol use has changed in a community.

Speakers:

Joshua Epstein, New York University

Robin Purshouse, Alan Brennan, Charlotte Buckley and Tuong Vu, University of Sheffield

Bill Kerr and Alexandra Nielsen, Alcohol Research Group

Jürgen Rehm and Charlotte Probst, Centre for Addiction and Mental Health
