Please join us for this month's Public Health Association of NYC Policy Committee Meeting, which will feature a presentation on gun violence by Luis A. Rivera, New York State Public Health Association (NYPSHA) Policy and Advocacy Committee Member.
Gun violence in the U.S. is a public health crisis. Every day more than 89 Americans are killed by guns. The latest Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Fatal Injury Reports show that guns were responsible for 164,821 civilian U.S. deaths from 2010 to 2014 — 33,315 of these were under the age of 25. Guns manufactured in the U.S. do not need to pass federal safety standards. Gun violence affects all New Yorkers; people of color, women and children are particularly vulnerable. It plays a significant role in many cases of domestic violence, and this can spill over into other settings including healthcare facilities.
The New York State Public Health Association (NYSPHA) condemns all abhorrent motivated shooting deaths. Gun violence has a huge impact on children. Children are the victims of numerous shootings. They can also be involved in accidental shootings of other children, with three-year old one of the largest groups likely to be involved. We in NYPSHA is dedicated in advocating gun policies and protecting the citizens by sending a message to legislative and government officials the need to improve current gun safety laws.
Biography: Luis A. Rivera
Luis A. Rivera joined the NYPSHA PAC committee since February 2017 currently lives in New York City and Puerto Rico. Luis holds a bachelor’s degree in Health Care Administration from the University of Phoenix, a master’s degree in theology from the University of Caribe of Theology. Currently completing in August of 2019 his master’s is Public Health with a concentration in policy and program intervention Currently, volunteers for the American Red Cross, FEMA, and Medical reserve in both New York and Puerto Rico in emergency preparedness and education. Worked during disasters such as Hurricane Irma, Maria, and Michael in Florida and Puerto Rico.
Luis is a retired federal Health care worker for the Department of Veterans Affairs, USDA, and a Veteran who serve 12 years in active duty. Luis has contributed in many public health tasks for the Department of Health in community assessment, community-based participation research, and public health policy research. Currently, emphasizing in Gun policies and tobacco 21 projects and legislative changes.
