Dr. Rivera Mindt will discuss disparities in brain health and cognitive outcomes in three underrepresented minority (URM) populations: diverse older adults, persons living with HIV infection, and those with opioid use disorders. She will explore the factors that impact the expression of neurologic disease, cognition, and health behaviors; the mechanisms that influence sociocultural, behavioral, and medical factors on cognitive impairment among URM populations; and resilience and modifiable factors to promote brain health and improve cognitive functioning.
Dr. Monica Rivera Mindt is a professor of psychology at Fordham University with a joint appointment in neurology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. She is president of the Hispanic Neuropsychological Society and a board-certified neuropsychologist. She completed her doctorate at the University of Nebraska, and her research as an independent investigator and mentor has been funded by the NIH and the Alzheimer’s Association. Dr. Rivera Mindt focuses on the intersection of cultural neuroscience, neuropsychology, and health disparities. The primary aim of her work is to promote equity in brain health by advancing knowledge of how sociocultural factors impact the brain, cognition, and health behaviors.
