SBS Seminar Series: Black Gay and Bisexual Men and HIV Disparities

April 24
12:30-1:30pm
715 Broadway, 12th Floor, Room 1221

Please join the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences for this exciting Seminar Series featuring Dustin T. Duncan, ScD.

In many parts of the world, stark racial disparities in HIV prevalence, incidence, prevention and care outcomes continue to persist among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM), with Black/African American MSM most significantly impacted in the United States. Individual-level characteristics, including sexual behaviors and socio-economic status, do not fully account for racial/ethnic disparities in HIV among MSM. As well as providing background on HIV disparities among Black MSM, this talk will overview how neighborhood contexts and network characteristics influence risk for HIV infection as well as HIV-related prevention and care behaviors. In addition, this talk will describe the design, sampling methods, and data collection and management methods of the ongoing ‘Neighborhoods and Networks (N2) Cohort Study’, which uses real-time geospatial methods and in-depth assessments of multiple network typologies to investigate the impact of neighborhood- and network-level factors on HIV prevention and treatment.

Dustin T. Duncan, ScD is an associate professor in the Department of Population Health at the New York University School of Medicine, where he directs the NYU Spatial Epidemiology Lab. As a social and spatial epidemiologist, he studies how neighborhood characteristics influence population health and health disparities from an intersectional lens. His work includes applying emerging geospatial technologies such as Global Positioning System (GPS) devices and smart phones to, in part, examine spatial mobility and social networks in neighborhoods. Dr. Duncan completed his doctorate and the Alonzo Smythe Yerby Postdoctoral Fellowship, both in social epidemiology, at the Harvard University T.H. Chan School of Public Health.
