Internet and Mobile-Sourced Data in Public Health ft. Dr. Rumi Chunara

May 01
12:30-1:30pm
715 Broadway, 12th Floor, Room 1221

For this installment in the Biostatistics Seminar Series, CGPH's own Dr. Rumi Chunara will be giving her presentation on "Internet and Mobile-Sourced Data in Public Health".

Dr. Chunara’s research group has worked to understand how Internet and mobile-sourced data can provide high-resolution spatial and temporal views into public health phenomena. It is becoming clear that data from such virtual worlds can potentially impact our health as well. In this research overview seminar, Dr. Chunara will discuss their major contributions along three axes: 1) understanding the data generating process when people contribute information online; 2) identifying ways such data can augment current understanding of our health; and 3) developing statistical efforts to incorporate the data in disease models. Examples will span infectious and noncommunicable disease risks and outcomes, both in the US and globally. She will conclude with future plans that build off her and other state-of-the-art efforts in the literature.

Dr. Chunara is Assistant Professor at NYU since 2015. She is a recipient of various awards including an MIT Technology Review Top 35 Innovator under 35 Innovator (2014), an NSF Career award (2019) and a Gates Foundation Grant Challenges award (2019).
