Social and Behavioral Sciences Scholar Seminar Series: How to Apply for a Grant at NIH: Opportunities at the National Institute on Aging

Please join the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences for a lecture featuring Dr. Isis Mikhail, who will deliver a talk titled, "How to Apply for a Grant at NIH: Opportunities at the National Institute on Aging."

This presentation will provide an overall introduction about the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the grant application and review process, and tips about how to identify the appropriate funding opportunity and apply for a successful grant with a focus on the National Institute on Aging (NIA) and the different programs and funding opportunities at NIA. This will be followed by a Q & A period.


Speaker Bio: Dr. Isis Mikhail is Section Chief, Clinical Sciences Section (CSS) at the Scientific Review Branch (SRB) of the National Institute on Aging (NIA). Her role is to oversee Scientific Review Officers (SRO)s and organize peer review meetings to evaluate the scientific and technical merit of applications in areas of scientific interest of NIA’s mission with a focus on geriatrics and clinical gerontology.

Before joining SRB, Dr. Mikhail was at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) where she served as Program Director and Acting Branch Chief of the Clinical and Translational Epidemiology Branch (CTEB) at the Epidemiology and Genomics Research Program (EGRP). She also served as Chair of the Health Disparities Interest Group and a member of the NCI Special Studies Institutional Review Board (SSIRB). Then she served as Director of the Extramural Research Program (ERP) at NCI’s Office of Cancer Complementary and Alternative Medicine (OCCAM). Prior to joining NIH, Dr. Mikhail worked as Program Director and Research Coordinator of large-scale epidemiologic research studies and clinical trials at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Department of Medicine and the UAB School of Public Health (SOPH).

Dr. Mikhail has an MD from Cairo University School of Medicine and a Master's and Doctorate degrees in Epidemiology and International Health with honors from the UAB SOPH. She completed a fellowship in Preventive Medicine and Public Health at Emory University Rollins SOPH and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, GA.

Dr. Mikhail has mentored several fellows at NCI and NIA and led mock review training sessions at NIA’s Butler-Williams Scholars Program. Dr. Mikhail is a recipient of several awards from UAB, NCI, and NIA. She also serves in the leadership committee at the Aging and Public Health Section of the American Public Health Association (APHA) since 2016. Dr. Mikhail has over 50 publications and presentations in the areas of epidemiology of aging, chronic and infectious diseases, cancer, rheumatology and clinical immunology, genetics, health behavior, women’s health, health disparities, and complementary and alternative medicine.
