Join us for a discussion with Dr. Jennifer Lee, the new Director of the Bureau of Tobacco Control for the New York State Department of Health, and Dr. Achala Talati, Director of Tobacco Policy and Programs for the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene

Following the discussion, NYU students and faculty are invited for a special opportunity to sit down with Dr. Lee and join her for a more intimate conversation in a series of breakout rooms.  

About the Speakers
Dr. Jennifer Lee is the new Director of the Bureau of Tobacco Control for the New York State (NYS) Department of Health. An advocate, activist, and organizer for social justice and human rights issues, Dr. Lee is an experienced Public Health leader with a demonstrated history of working to address health inequities and health injustices in diverse communities. Previously, she served as Assistant Director of the Bureau of Community Chronic Disease Prevention (BCCDP), the AIDS Institute in the Bureau of Special Populations, Office of the Medical Director; and the Center for Program, Development, Implementation, Research, and Evaluation (CPDIRE) at the NYS Department of Health. Prior to working at the Health Department. Dr. Lee worked in community-based settings with individuals and communities disproportionately impacted by HIV. Dr. Lee is the first recipient of the Dr. Adwele Troutman Health Equity and Social Justice Scholars Award, demonstrating her commitment and dedication to the principles of health equity, social justice, human rights, community activism, and national and global health. She received her MPH in Health Policy and Administration and her PhD in Community Health and Health Policy at the CUNY Graduate School of Public Health and Health Policy. 

Achala Talati, DO, MS, MPH is the Director of the Tobacco Policy and Programs Unit at the New York City (NYC) Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH). Dr. Talati is a board certified preventive medicine physician and internist. She completed her Public Health/Preventive Medicine Residency at DOHMH and her Internal Medicine Residency at Albany Medical Center. Dr. Talati also holds a Master of Public Health in Epidemiology and Biostatistics from the CUNY School of Public Health and Health Policy. Dr. Talati has led clinical initiatives at the Health Department that focus on increased education for the provider community and equitable access to care for all New Yorkers. As Director of the Tobacco Policy and Programming Unit, she managed implementation of the City’s ten tobacco bills passed in 2017, on issues such as retail licensing, retail density, hookah, and e-cigarettes. She also oversaw the local response to the e-cigarette- or vaping-associated lung injury (EVALI) outbreak in 2019 and manages ongoing surveillance for EVALI in NYC.
