Hosted by the GPH Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences
This event will describe the on-the-ground events in Ukraine followed by an analysis from social science/public health perspectives. The focus is on the impact of the war on displaced populations from Ukraine and the profound public health impact of mass displacement. Halyna Skipalska, HealthRight Country Director for Ukraine and the Executive Director of the Ukrainian Foundation for Public Health, will describe the current conditions in Ukraine. This will be followed by commentary from faculty in the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences (SBS), who will analyze the population health impacts of this displacement from perspectives of disaster science (Dr. David Abramson), child maltreatment (Dr. Kate Guastaferro), and migration stigma (Dr. Lawrence Yang). Integration of these social-behavioral science perspectives will be undertaken by Dr. Ralph DiClemente, SBS Department Chair.
This event is the first in a planned series of "Think tanks" led by the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences regarding the public health impacts of "Displacement from the War on Ukraine." This hybrid event (i.e., in-person and via Zoom) will be followed by an in-person reception for attendees.
In-person space is limited. Please RSVP early to secure your spot.
Registration for in-person attendance is currently only open for NYU community members. Non-NYU attendees/visitors are not invited at this time to attend in person as this requires pre-approval. Instead we invite you to join us remotely on Zoom.
