HealthRight International Awards NYU School of Global Public Health the Community Partner Award at the 2024 Peter C. Alderman Health + Human Rights Awards
NYU School of Global Public Health proudly announces that it has been awarded the Community Partner Award at HealthRight International’s 2024 Peter C. Alderman Health + Human Rights Awards. This honor recognizes a decade-long partnership dedicated to advancing public health interventions and addressing some of the world's most pressing health and human rights challenges.
“The partnership was established [in 2014] with a clear mission: to develop and evaluate new public health interventions, create practical learning opportunities, and share resources to further the missions of both institutions,” remarks Dr. Peter Navario, CEO of HealthRight and professor at the NYU School of Global Public Health. Together, we advance the practice of public health, turning research into practical solutions that benefit communities worldwide.
Over the past ten years, 15 different NYU faculty members have collaborated with HealthRight in Kenya, Uganda, and Ukraine, generating over $1 million in grant revenues. 75 NYU students have gained skills and insights through internships with HealthRight, deepening their commitment to public health practice. This partnership has also led to the development of a 15-credit Advanced Certificate in Health and Human Rights and three new courses derived from HealthRight’s fieldwork. Field-based research conducted with NYU colleagues ensures that HealthRight continues to perform cutting-edge, evidence-based work, while HealthRight's field operations provide NYU faculty with vital on-the-ground experience.
The Community Partner Award was proudly accepted by Dr. Melody Goodman, Interim Dean of the School of Global Public Health, whose remarks highlighted the key impact areas this partnership has created:
- Research with Relevance: By focusing on real-world challenges identified by HealthRight's fieldwork, academic research conducted through this partnership has become more targeted and impactful. Solutions developed in academic settings are tested and refined in the field, ensuring they address real needs and make a tangible difference.
- Enhanced Credibility: Interventions implemented by HealthRight gain a stronger foundation when backed by the rigorous research and validation provided by NYU’s academic expertise. This blend of practical application and scholarly insight enhances the credibility and effectiveness of public health initiatives.
- Bridging the Gap: This partnership provides NYU students with invaluable practical experience in the field, while academics gain a deeper understanding of on-the-ground realities. This fosters a more relevant and engaged approach to research, ensuring that academic endeavors are closely aligned with field needs.
- Innovation for Impact: The collaboration between HealthRight and NYU has created a dynamic space for innovation. By combining the expertise of academia and NGOs, new tools, technologies, and strategies for social good have been co-created, driving forward the impact of public health interventions.
Reflecting on the partnership, Dr. Goodman remarked, “I would like to take a moment to acknowledge the exceptional contributions of our esteemed colleague, Dr. Peter Navario. His leadership and wealth of experience have been invaluable to our faculty, and we are truly fortunate to have him as part of our team.”
As we celebrate this extraordinary ten-year collaboration, we look forward to continuing our partnership with HealthRight International. We applaud the vital and important work done by HealthRight and are committed to furthering our shared mission.
