The NIEHS WTP was created in order to address the educational and technical needs of workers in a range of job titles who face occupational and environmental hazards. Since its inception in 1990, the training consortiums operating under the program have designed various worker education programs and trained many public and private sector employees in New York and New Jersey.
Since 2017, the NYU GPH has been part of the New Jersey/New York Hazardous Materials Worker Training Program, a consortium of universities, labor unions, and state agencies funded by the NIEHS to prevent disease and disability among environmental and hazardous waste and emergency response workers. It is the only training entity in New York State approved by NIEHS and recommended by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to provide worker training.
Previously operated under the Hunter College/CUNY School of Public Health Center for Occupational and Environmental Health (COEH) since 1990, the training center continues to this day to deliver necessary training under the NYU GPH banner.
