Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for social anxiety disorder (SAD) is widely tested as a treatment package and we normally assume that all treatment components are equally effective. Still, there is room for improvement and understanding about how effective each treatment component and what may be the mechanisms of change involved would help optimize treatment. In this webinar, Dr. Rodrigo Lopes will present the methods and results of his OPTIMIZE research project, which aims to (1) examine the main effects of psychoeducation, cognitive restructuring, attention training and exposure components on SAD symptoms and (2) examine the meditational role of hypothesized mechanisms of change underlying the effective components of ICBT for SAD.  In this research project he ran a factorial trial, with 464 participants diagnosed with SAD. They received a self-guided ICBT program (Shyne) for 8 weeks with minimal guidance. Some findings challenging the current state of the art of CBT were found and will be discussed.
