Hosted by the GPH Department of Global & Environmental Health
Please join the GPH Department of Global & Environmental Health on Monday, April 22nd for the Department of Global & Environmental Health's Earth Day Event. You will have the opportunity to hear from this year’s William N. Rom Climate Change Fellows, Liz Carr and Marisa Guerrero. After having the opportunity to attend the 2023 International Conference on Urban Health in Atlanta, Georgia, the Fellows partnered with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to support them in writing a framing paper outlining how climate change interacts with the HIV pandemic through exacerbating food insecurity, prevalence of other diseases, human migration and forced displacement, and erosion of public health infrastructure. Understanding the interconnected nature of these phenomena promotes adaptation and mitigation strategies that encourage healthy, sustainable collaboration and resource allocation in alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the commitment to leave no-one behind.
Climate Change has become one of public health's greatest challenges impacting communities globally through extreme weather events. These events include food insecurity from drought effects, heat and heat waves, forest fires, air pollution from fossil fuels, and coastal flooding with sea level rising. The William N. Rom Climate Change Fellows address these public health issues with projects on climate and health with a faculty mentor. Climate Change Fellows' projects range from urban health, small island states, and environmental justice to drought and storm-induced famine, and public health response. Join on April 22nd to support the Fellows as they present their WNR Climate Fellowship Presentations to the Department of Global and Environmental Health and wider GPH community.
